Principles of customer service

AC 2.1 - Describe needs of different types of customer

Food for different cultures

Tourism organisations are increasingly aware that they need to meet the needs of customers from different cultures.  A good example of how the world has seen different cultures mix over recent years is in the range of food provided by different tourism organisations.

Some tourists like to try different foods when they travel and certain foods have become associated with different cultures and nations.

Activity

Imagine that you are a catering manager in a large international hotel and you are planning to cater for people attending a conference from around the world.

Suggest what you could provide on the menu to meet the needs of people from the countries listed below.  Write two sentences to summarise what ‘traditional food’ people from each country might like to be provided for them and what might they not be allowed to eat because of their religion.

  • France
  • China
  • USA
  • Germany
  • Spain
  • Israel
  • Norway & Sweden
  • Italy
  • The United Kingdom
  • India

(You might like to do some research on traditional foods from different countries and the types of food people from different religions might not be allowed to eat.)
